Horizon recovery practitioner Mollie Mayers is heading up to Newcastle to take on the iconic Great North Run to raise money for Alcohol Change UK.
Mollie is aiming to raise £600 for the charity, using her own recovery journey as motivation to take on the 13.1 mile challenge this weekend.
Mollie explained: “After a long toxic relationship with alcohol, I finally decided that enough was enough and I had my last alcoholic drink on January 1st 2024”.
“Since then, I have changed my whole life. I started to claw back the years I lost by feeding my inner child and trying to rediscover who I am and what makes me happy… part of that transformation was running”.
As a recovery practitioner at Horizon, Mollie uses her lived experience to help people in Blackpool break free from addiction.
Mollie added: “Alcohol makes you feel amazing in the moment but terrible afterwards whereas running makes you feel terrible in the moment but amazing afterwards”.
“Alcohol Change UK is so important to me because they’re trying to reconceptualise our relationships with alcohol by reducing harm and shifting cultural norms.
Funds raised will go towards more research to end social stigma, creating better policies around alcohol consumption and promotion and funding more treatment and support services.
Mollie will be joining 60,000 determined and dedicated runners at the world’s biggest and best half marathon. The Great North Run is famous for its warm North East welcome, unbeatable atmosphere and the millions raised for good causes.
It’s a great opportunity for everyone – including runners and spectators – to come together and support one another.
